LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 8, 1999) — The University of Kentuckymen’s soccer team continued its winning ways onFriday, besting Eastern Michigan 2-0 at the UKSoccer Complex.
UK freshman J.D. Stephenson played the hero for theCats, netting the game’s first goal in the 37th minute and assisting on BrentRainey’s 88th-minute tally.
UK netminder Brian O’Leary needed just one save to post his thirdconsecutive shutout and fifth of the season. O’Leary and the Cats have notallowed a goal in over 270 minutes.
UK held a 14-3 shot advantage over the Eagles in a match which wasmarred by a combined 32 fouls and four yellow cards.
“It may not have been pretty, but we’ll take a win,” UK Coach Ian Collinssaid. “Our defense was amazing. I can’t say enough about their efforts.”
With the win, UK improves to 7-3, 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference,while the Eagles fall to 4-6, 0-1 in the MAC.
The Cats return to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 10, when they travel to MusicCity to face Vanderbilt at 4 p.m. in an annual non-conference showdown.The UK women’s squad kicks off the UK-Vandy double-header at 1 p.m.at the VU Soccer Field in Nashville.
