Kentucky women roll in second win of season.
OXFORD, Ohio (Nov. 22, 1999) — The University of Kentuckywomen’s basketball team charted its second win ofthe season, dominating Miami, Ohio 77-39 onMonday.
For the second straight game an abundance ofWildcats scored in double figures as junior forwardLaura Meadows led the way with her firstdouble-double of the season. Meadows knockeddown 18 points and tyed her career-high 11boards. She also recorded three blocks.Sophomore forward Tanesha Seaton also recordedseason and career bests with her first careerdouble-double, 15 points and 10 rebounds. SeniorErica Jackson and sophomore Carolyn Alexanderscored 15 and 10 points, respectively.
“I am very pleased with our defense,” fifth-yearCoach Bernadette Mattox said. “That is somethingwe have been working hard on in practice. Wewanted to come out and play great defense. Ithought Tanesha did an outstanding job, but sheneeds more games under her belt to really come toher own.”
Kentucky controlled the tempo early in the game,jumping to a 12-2 lead on six Jackson layups. TheRedHawks fought back however on 10 first-halfAubree Hamilton points, to pull within four. Seatonand Katie Vieth provided the spark off the bench,adding to the inside threat of Meadows and seniorShantia Owens. Seaton scored eight points in thepaint in the first half, while Vieth added four pointsto give the Cats a 36-21 halftime lead.
UK held Miami to a mere 23.2 percent shooting for the game and allowedonly one Miami player to score over six points. Hamilton led the RedHawkswith 16 points and nine rebounds.
“We made them take rushed shots and I was pleased with how we heldthem,” Mattox said. “We still had too many turnovers and we aren’t as goodas we want to be heading to play the No. 1 team in the country.”
UK will face preseason No. 1Connecticut (1-0) on Wednesday, Nov. 24 inthe first round of the inaugural Coach vs. Cancer Challenge in Hartford,Conn., at 7 p.m. Old Dominion and Clemson will play in the opening roundat 5 p.m. Both games will be televised on regional ESPN while thechampionship game on Nov. 26 at 4 p.m. will be televised on ESPN2.
