The senior runner earns All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships
DURHAM, N.C. (May 31, 2000) — University of Kentucky senior JeffLimpert finished his final track campaign by tying theUK 800-meter outdoor record and earning All-Americahonors Wednesday at the 2000 NCAA OutdoorChampionships.
Limpert crossed the finish line in a time of 1:48.02,shaving 0.37 seconds off his personal-best set at the2000 Southeastern Conference OutdoorChampionships. His time was tied for the eighthfastest of the day, but even though the top eightmoved on to the finals, Limpert did not advance. Thetop two in each heat, along with the next two fastesttimes, qualified for the finals. Limpert, however,finished fourth in his heat while the runner with whomhe tied automatically advanced by claiming second inhis.
“There are mixed emotions about his performance,”head coach Don Weber said. “It is great that he set apersonal best and earned All-America, but we believeif he had qualified for the finals, he could have runeven faster against this competition to possibly qualifyfor the Olympic Trials. He has been invited to run atanother meet for one last opportunity to make theTrials. So he is excited by that.”
By virtue of finishing sixth among American runners,Limpert claimed his first outdoor All-America honor togo along with his 1999 indoor distinction. He nowholds the school 800-meter record indoors andoutdoors, as well. Limpert established the top indoormark in 1999 with a time of 1:49.25, and he nowshares the outdoor mark with Brian Masylar, who hasheld th
e record since 1988. UK will be represented once again when senior MattKavanagh takes the field Thursday, June 1, to attempt to become anAll-American for the third time in the hammer throw. Action gets underway at 11a.m. in Wallace Wade Stadium at Duke University.
