Howland goes 2-for-3 to lead Wildcats in losing effort.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 30, 2000) — The UK softball team split adoubleheader with the Louisville CardinalsWednesday evening at the UK Softball Complex.Highlighted by Morgan Marr’s first career shutout, theCats scored a 3-0 victory over UL in the secondgame, while the Cards grabbed a 2-0 win in the firstgame.
UK (18-16, 2-2 SEC) jumped on the board in thesecond game when Leslie Kwiatkowski stole thirdbase and scored on UL catcher Christina Soto’sthrowing error, giving the Cats a 1-0 lead. The Catsadded two insurance runs in the sixth on Angie DalPozzo’s two-run single that scored Kwiatkowski andJen Howland as UK went on to a 3-0 victory.
Marr struck out two batters, while improving to 3-2 onthe season. UL pitcher Tara McClure dropped to 10-4with the loss, despite recording eight strikeouts.
In the first game, UK left eight runners on baseincluding the bases loaded in the first inning and wereunable to get on the board as the Cards captured a2-0 victory. UL used the sixth inning to score thegame’s only two runs.
Howland led the Cats at the plate, going 2-for-3, as UK managed just three hitsin the game. Dal Pozzo recorded UK’s other hit. UK hurler Keary Camunasdropped to 10-9, while UL’s Jessica Rak improved to 12-4.
“Morgan Marr pitched a great game tonight in getting her first career shutout,”UK coach Beth Kirchner said. “The Louisville pitchers did a good job of keepingus off balance. We need to get our bats hot heading into our big weekend serieswith Georgia.”
UK will travel to Athens, Ga. for back-to-back doubleheaders against theGeorgia Bulldogs on Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1. The first gameFriday is set for 5 p.m. (EST) with the second game slated for 7 p.m.
