SoftballCats push record win streak to seven.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 24, 2000) — The UK softball team swept theAuburn Tigers, 4-3 and 10-6, in the Cats’Southeastern Conference series opener, pushing itsschool-record winning streak to seven games. TheCats have won 10 out of their last 11 games.
Junior slugger Leslie Kwiatkowski was a combined6-for-8 at the plate with six RBIs, two stolen bases,and three runs scored. Freshman Lyndsey Anguswas 5-for-8 with an RBI, while scoring four runs. BethFogle added five hits for the Cats, who outhit Auburn,one the league’s top three hitting teams, 16-7 in thefirst game and 13-9 in the second game.
Auburn took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning,however UK (17-13, 2-0 SEC) responded with threeruns to take a 3-2 lead. Kwiatkowski singled tocenter, scoring Fogle from second base, and AngieDal Pozzo hit into a fielders choice, scoring Angusfrom third. Andrea Eilertson’s sacrifice fly scoredKwiatkowski, capping UK’s three-run third inning.
The Tigers tied the game in the top of the sixth whenfirst baseman Mary Petrie scored from third on athrowing error by Angus. Once again, the Catsresponded to the Auburn rally. Angus, who doubled toleft center, scored on Kwiatkowski’s RBI-triple tobreak the tie and give UK a 4-3 victory over Auburn.
UK hurler Keary Camunas improved to 9-7 with thewin. Petrie, who came in to relieve starter JaimeRasmussen in the bottom of the third, took the loss,dropping her record to 3-1.
In the second game, UK roared out to a 10-0 lead inthe bottom of the second inning. The Cats scored fourruns in the first and added six in the second inning.
Auburn (22-14, 2-6) pushed two runs across in the third, fourth, and fifth inning,cutting the Cats’ advantage to 10-6. Camunas, who started the game and wasrelieved in the third inning by Jennifer Howland, returned to pitch the final twoinning without allowing a run. Camunas, who has won her last sevenconsecutive starts, improved to 10-7, just four wins shy of her own school markfor wins in a season.
Every UK batter recorded a hit in the game as Nikki Jones, Fogle, Angus, andKwiatkowski tallied three hits apiece and scored two runs each. Tiffany Krusetied the school record with her sixth triple of the season and added a RBI.
“We are very happy to get two SEC wins,” UK coach Beth Kirchner said. “Wehit the ball extremely well in both games, and we got two great pitchingperformances from Keary Camunas.”
UK will play host to the 14th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday, March25, at the UK Softball Complex. The first game of the doubleheader is set for 2p.m., while the second game is slated for 4 p.m.
