CITRUS SPRINGS, Fla.– The University of Kentucky men’s golf team concluded its spring break trip with its second 5th place finish in as many tournaments, as the Wildcats scored a final round 295 on Tuesday at the El Diablo Intercollegiate. Baylor ran away with the title of the event held at the El Diablo Golf and Country Club, while Northern Illinois’ Dave Emanuelson was the individual winner by two strokes.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was senior Ron Layman who earned his second straight and third career top 10 finish, tying for 7th by shooting a three-round total of 223 (73-76-74). Layman previously tied for 9th at the Silver Spring Shores Invitational after carding a 215 (71-71-73), March 11-12.
Also posting a strong finish was junior Wes Furnish who finished two strokes behind Layman, tying for 12th with a 225 (77-74-74). Layman and Furnish were UK’s only top 20 finishers as the Wildcats finished 30 shots off the pace set by Baylor. The team score of 909 (307-307-295) was Kentucky’s worst score of the 1999-00 season, despite equaling the team’s best finish.
The Wildcats return to action March 31 – April 1 when they play host to the Johnny Owens Invitational at Kearney Hills Golf Club.
