LEXINGTON, Kty. — The University of Kentucky softball team captured a 7-2 win over theButler Bulldogs on the final day of the Kentucky Invitational at the UKSoftball Complex on Sunday. The Cats finished third overall in the two-daytournament with a 2-1.
BU (1-7) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the firstinning, but the Cats held the Bulldogs scoreless through the final sixinnings.
In the top of the third, UK freshman Lyndsey Angus doubled to left centerand scored on Leslie Kwiatkowski’s RBI-single. Tiffany Kruse tripled tolead off the top of the fourth and scored on Andi Eilertson’s sacrifice fly.
With the game tied, 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning, Angus hit hersecond double of the game to score Nikki Jones from third and Sandi Denglerfrom second. Kwiatkowski followed with an RBI-single to right field,scoring Beth Fogle from third. Angie Dal Pozzo laid down a perfectsacrifice bunt to score Angus from third. Kwiatkowski scored on a wildpitch by BU pitcher Melissa Benter as the Cats scored a 7-2 win.
Freshman pitcher Morgan Marr earned her second victory of the season,moving her record to 2-1. Angus was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, andscored two runs. Kwiatkowski was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Tiffany Kruseadded a 2-for-4 performance and scored a run.
“Morgan had a solid outing today, and we played well defensively whichmakes it easier to win games,” UK coach Beth Kirchner said. “We arebeginning to find some consistency and that should continue as our youngteam gains more experience.”
UK (11-13) returns to action on Saturday, March 18 when the Catsparticipate in the Aces’ Classic in Evansville, Ind. The Cats will faceEvansville at 1 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. contest against Indiana.
