CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Kentucky softball team split in its firsttwo games on Friday, the opening day of the Choo Choo Tournament.
UK scored a 1-0 victory over the Connecticut Huskies in the Cats’ first game ofthe day at Jim Frost Stadium. With the game tied in the top of the sixth,sophomore Beth Fogle scored from third base on a throwing error by Connecticutcatcher Jamine Blesoff. Nikki Jones singled. Moving Fogle to third base,however the error allowed Fogle to score the game winning run.
Pitcher Keary Camunas picked up her first win of the season, moving her recordto 1-5, and earned her 13th career shutout. Jen Howland recorded two hits forthe Cats.
In the Cats’ second game, UK dropped a 2-1 decision to hostTennessee-Chattanooga.UK got on the board in the top of the first when Fogle scored from third baseon a wild pitch by UTC pitcher Beth Alexander.
UTC (7-6) tied the game in the bottom of the second when Carrie Hamiltondoubled to right center off Camunas, scoring Ashley Sherman from second. In thebottom of the fifth, the Lady Mocs took a 2-1 lead when Jaci Welsh doubled toright field, scoring Talya Trudell, who reached on a single and went to thirdon a two-base error by UK right fielder Michelle Bucci.
Lady Mocs’ pitcher Beth Alexander moved her record to 1-3 with the win, whileCamunas dropped to 1-6 on the season. Awbrey Winckler earned her first save ofthe year for UTC.
UK (4-9) returns to action on Saturday when the Cats take on Liberty at 12:30p.m.
