Kosten and Olson record top five finishes.

AUBURN, Ala. (Feb. 18, 2000) — University of Kentucky swimmers AnnabelKosten and Melissa Olson each recorded top five finishes at the2000 Southeastern Conference Swimming and DivingChampionships Friday night at the James E. Martin AquaticCenter. Kosten swam her way to a fourth place finish in thefinals of the women’s 100-yard butterfly with a NCAAprovisional qualifying time of 55.44. Olson jumped up threespots from her preliminary qualifying time to finish fifth in thefinals of the 400 individual medley. Olson’s time of 4:18.37 metthe NCAA provisional time standard by more than six seconds.

Junior diver Carrie Knoeber finished fifth overall on the 3-meterdiving event with a score of 479.05, qualifying her for theNCAA Zone Diving Meet and also breaking her previouscareer high score. Juniors Macon White and Shaun Zitani brokeindividual school records and were members of UK’s recordbreaking 800 freestyle relay team

White broke his own team record in the finals of the 200freestyle, finishing seventh with a time of 1:37.20, twoone-hundredths better than his old record of 1:37.22, which metthe NCAA “B” cut.

Zitani’s time of 48.25 shattered the existing UK record of 49.22(Maurice Stewart) in the 100 butterfly. Zitani won theconsolation heat, and his time met the NCAA “B” cut. The UKmen’s 800 freestyle relay consisting of David Tweedie, AaronWorkman, White, and Zitani, finished fifth with a time of6:38.04, breaking the old mark of 6:39.63 set in 1997. The timealso was just under the NCAA provisional time standard.

Sophomore Carolyn Rader swam her lifetime best in the 200 freestyle, winning theconsolation heat with a time of 1:48.35, meeting the NCAA provisional mark. In theteam standings, the UK men are in a tight four-way battle, currently standing in fifth placeoverall with 199 points, one point better than sixth place South Carolina. On the women’sside, the Cats are sixth place with 236 points, only forty points behind fourth placeTennessee.

“It has been an incredibly fast and intimidating meet to swim,” UK coach Gary Conellysaid. “I am proud of the way our kids have stepped up and swam fast. All of our swimsFriday night were faster than in the morning, so I am happy we are accepting thechallenge of the competition.” The final day of competition begins Saturday morning withpreliminaries at 11:30 a.m. (EST), while finals are set for 7:30 p.m. Complete meetresults can be found on the internet at www.secsports.com orwww.auburn.edu/athletics/secswimming.
