CHARLESTON, S.C. – Mark Michael became the third UK rookie hurler of theweekend to win his collegiate debut as the Kentucky hitters came alive inan 11-0 shutout of Howard in the second game of Sunday’s twin-bill.
The Cats edged the Bison 4-3 in the opener as freshman Rob Corrado alsopitched five scoreless innings for the win. Scott Wade was the other froshto earn a victory as he pitched 5-2/3 innings on Friday against CharlestonSouthern without allowing an earned run.
“I am extremely happy with the ways our guys competed this weekend,” UKcoach Keith Madison said. “Our freshman pitchers followed the lead ofBrandon Webb and came out throwing strikes and gave us a chance to win eachballgame. Our defense turned eight double plays this weekend and only madeone fielding error in four games. Those two things are really good to seein your first game action of the season.
Michael got more offensive support in the nightcap than Corrado did in theopener as the Cats pounded out 11 hits in game two, led by John Wilson’stwo triples and four RBI. Rightfielder Breck Price went 3-for-4 with a pairof doubles.
Kentucky’s next game action comes next weekend in Jacksonville, Fla. whereUK will play three games at Jacksonville University’s Brest Field. The Catswill take on Jacksonville in a pair of games on Friday and Saturday and theNaval Academy for a single game on Sunday.
