CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshman Rob Corrado pitched five shutout innings in hiscollegiate debut and the Cats held on to beat the Howard Bison, 4-3, ingame one of the doubleheader played at Charleston Southern’s BuccaneerStadium.
Corrado (1-0) pitched well in his first UK start as he allowed just fourhits and two walks, striking out one, in his five innings of work. The 6’5right-hander was in a groove for most of the afternoon as he allowed Howard(0-6) just two hits and a walk over the first four innings. Corrado gotinto trouble in the top of the fifth as the first two Howard battersreached base, but changed to complexion of the inning by picking the leadrunner off second base. After a fly out and a single put runners on firstand second with two out, Corrado ended the HU threat by picking another manoff of second.
For the second time in three games, UK (3-0) broke into the scoring columnin the fourth inning. After a lead-off single by Aaron McGlone an error bythe HU shortstop on a ball hit by John Wilson put runners on second andthird with no outs. Both runners scored without the benefit of a hit asMcGlone sprinted home on a wild pitch and Wilson came in on a double-playgrounder by Seth Morris.
The Cats extended their lead to four in the fifth when Andy Green crushedhis second double of the game to drive home Austin Madison. After a VinceHarrison infield single moved Green over the third, the UK second basemanscored on a single by McGlone.
The Bison pulled within a run in the sixth as HU third baseman EuniqueJohnson crushed a three-run homer off reliever Josh Paxton, but closerBreck Price shut the door on HU with three strikeouts in the seventh.
Both games were seven inning affairs since the teams were playing adoubleheader.
