Cats are later ousted in consolation quarterfinals.

ARLINGTON, Texas (Feb. 12, 2000) — The UK softball teamcaptured a thrilling 5-4 win over the Louisiana TechLady Techsters in eight innings on the second dayof the UTA Tournament.

Three UK players recorded two hits apiece, whileBeth Fogle scored the game-winning run on AngieDal Pozzo’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighthinning.

UK got on the board first in the bottom of the firstwhen freshman Lyndsey Angus doubled to rightcenter, scoring Beth Fogle from second.

After the Lady Techsters took a 2-1 lead in the topof the third, the Cats tied the game at 2-2, whenjunior Leslie Kwiatkowski hit her first home run ofthe season, a solo shot to centerfield. Techanswered UK in the top of the fifth when they puttwo runs across to go ahead, 4-2.

The Cats tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the sixth, when Kwiatkowskitripled to score Angus from third base. Tiffany Kruse grounded out tosecond, scoring Kwiatkowski.

Kwiatkowski led the Cats, going 2-3 with two RBIs and scored two runs.Fogle and Angus added two hits apiece for UK.

UK’s win over the Lady Techsters earned the Cats a date with South WestTexas St. in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.

The Cats built a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but three costlyUK errors allowed the Bobcats to tie the game, 2-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, UK had three players throw out at home. Onthe third out, Angus was called out at home on a very questionable call, aftera wild pitch by SW Texas St. Angus appeared to have gotten to the platefirst and was under the tag, however, the umpire called her out and the gamewent into extra innings.

Using the international tiebreaker in extra innings (placing the runner, whomade the final out in the previous inning, on second to start the new inning),the Bobcats doubled two straight times, scoring the tying run and thegame-winning run.

In UK’s first game of the day, 1999 College World Series participantSouthern Miss handed the Cats a 4-1 loss, while Golden Eagle All-Americanpitcher Courtney Blades struck out 17 UK batters.

UK returns to action on Friday, Feb. 17, when the Cats travel to Tucson,Ariz., to participate in the University of Arizona Tournament, Feb. 17-19.
