CHARLESTON, S.C. – Backup catcher Jason Wolfe drove in four runs andfreshman starter Scott Wade pitched 5-2/3 innings in his collegiate debutas the Cats moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 13-2 trouncing ofCharleston Southern.
Wolfe went 3-for-5 with a pair of run scoring doubles as he spelledAll-American John Wilson behind the plate. Wilson was the team’s designatedhitter in the game and drove in a pair of runs despite going hitless.Third baseman Vince Harrison produced his second multi-hit game in as manydays, going 3-for-4 and scoring two runs.
Unlike yesterday when Brandon Webb kept the Buccaneers off the bases andthe Cats out of trouble, CSU (1-4) was able to put pressure on the Cats inWade’s outing. The Kingsport, Tenn. native showed some rookie jitters as hehit two batters and committed a pair of errors on pick off attempts, one ofwhich led to a CSU run. But Wade (1-0) showed the savvy of a veteran as heescaped his first career outing without allowing an earned run. Wadepitched out of situations with men on second and third with two out in thefirst, men on first and second with one out in the third and a man on thirdand no outs in the fourth. Wade struck out four and walked just one.
Kentucky opened the scoring in the second with a pair of runs on fivehits. Robert Newton led the inning off with a double and, after a buntsingle by Harrison, was chased home on catcher Wolfe’s single through thehole at short. Seth Morris then knocked home Harrison with a bloop singleto right. A bunt single by Beau Moore loaded the bases with one out, butTim Brooks got Andy Green to hit a foul pop to the catcher and AaronMcGlone to ground to second, ending the threat.
The same players did more damage the next inning as Harrison started atwo-out rally with a base hit followed by doubles by Wolfe and Morris thatled to two more runs. Morris scored the fifth UK run when the CSU shortstopmade an error on a ball hit by Jeff Meade. Brooks (0-1) made it out of thethird, but just barely. He faced one batter in the fourth and was pulledafter Green knocked a single back up the middle for the tenth hit given upby Brooks.
The Cats broke the game open in the sixth inning and again in the eighthas the CSU first baseman missed the throw from shortstop on a ground ballhit by Green to allow Meade and Moore to score in the sixth. After a flyout to left by Aaron McGlone moved Green over to third, Wilson drove in theUK second baseman with a ground out to shortstop. In the eighth, the CSUfirst baseman made another error as he made an errant throw to second thatput Brad Pickrell and McGlone on second and third with one out. AfterWilson was intentionally walked to load the bases, a single by Newton and asacrifice fly by Harrison each plated a runner before Wolfe’s second doubleof the afternoon drove home two more to close the scoring. The Bucs madefour errors in the game that led to three unearned runs by Kentucky.
In addition to Wade’s promising outing, the Cats got good relief work fromAustin Madison, Nick Zielke and Jarrod Reynolds. The trio pitched acombined 3-1/3 innings and allowed just one run.
The Cats will conclude their road trip with a doubleheader tomorrowafternoon against Howard University. Game one will begin at noon with eachgame scheduled for seven innings. Starting and making his collegiate debutfor the Cats in game one will be freshman Rob Corrado. The game two starteris yet to be determined.
