LEXINGTON, Kty. — University of Kentucky swimmers Shaun Zitani and Melissa Olson were namedthe Southeastern Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimmers of the Week, theconference announced Wednesday.
Zitani, a junior from Port St. Lucie, Fla., was honored for the secondconsecutive week as the SEC’s top male swimmer. Zitani won the 50- and100-yard freestyles, leading the UK men’s team (4-2) to a 162-151 victoryover Cincinnati last Saturday. Zitani’s time of 20.14 in the 50 freestylewas his fastest of the season and met the NCAA provisional time standard.He is undefeated in the 50 freestyle this season.
This is the third consecutive week that a member of the UK men’s swimmingand diving team was named the SEC Swimmer of the Week. Macon White won theaward for the week of Jan. 10-16, while Zitani was honored last week.
Melissa Olson, a junior from Charleston, W. Va., was honored as the SECWomen’s Swimmer of the Week, the first time a member of the UK women’s teamhas won the award this season.
Olson met the NCAA provisional time standard in the 400 individual medleywith a winning time of 4:18.70, as the women’s squad (7-0) capped off anundefeated season with a 173-143 victory over Cincinnati. She also won the200 I.M., while recording a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke. Hertime in the 400 I.M. is the third fastest time recorded in the SEC thisseason. She owns the team’s top time in five events this season.
