Wildcats notch first victories of spring session.
(Feb. 1, 2000) — The University of Kentucky rifle team notched itsfirst victories of the spring session on Sunday, Jan.30, when the Cats finished fourth at the WithrowInvitational in Murray, Ky.
The Cats counted victories over Morehead and theUniversity of Tennessee-Martin, while countinglosses to Alaska-Fairbanks, Murray St. andNebraska.
The Cats finished third in the smallbore with aseason-best 4591. Freshman Crystal Hamilton shota personal-best 1168, and junior Matt Newburncontributed a career-high 1157.
UK had a tough time in the air rifle competition,shooting a 1502 en route to a seventh place finish.
“Overall, I feel that we performed well, and theteam is starting to see that they have the potential to reach their goals,”Coach Harry Mullins said. “We’re starting to put things together, and withanother week of hard training, we should be on track.”
The Cats are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 5 when they head to TerreHaute, Ind. to take on the Rose Hulman Engineers.
