LEXINGTON, Kty. – University of Kentucky men’s center Jamaal Magloire and sophomore forward LaTonya McDole of the UK women’s team were named the Southeastern Conference Players of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office.
Magloire averaged 15.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game over the holidays, tallying four double-doubles in the last five games and becoming the first Wildcat since 1990 to string together three double-doubles in a row. The Toronto native had 12 points and 10 rebounds vs. U of L, 18 points and 11 boards against then-No. 5 Michigan State, 10 points and three rebounds vs. Alaska-Anchorage and a career-high 21 points and 13 rebounds against Missouri, all UK victories. He shot 52.5 percent from the field and 86.4 percent from the foul line while becoming the school’s all-time leader in blocked shots.
For the season, the 6-10, 260-pounder is second on the team in scoring (11.9 ppg), first in rebounding (8.1 rpg) and first in blocked shots (2.0 bpg). It’s Magloire’s first SEC Player of the Week honor and UK’s first since Wayne Turner and Heshimu Evans won back-to-back awards in December ’98.
McDole led the women’s team in scoring in all three of its games over Christmas break. The 6-1 sophomore charted two back-to-back double-doubles in the Wildcats’ first two victories during the holidays, tallying 19 points and 10 rebounds against Cincinnati before following the effort with 22 points and 14 boards vs. UT-Martin. She then went on to record a career-high 24 points in the one-point loss to Xavier on New Year’s Eve.
For the season, McDole is the Cats’ second-leading scorer, averaging 12.5 ppg. This is the first SEC Player of the Week honor for the Dayton, Ohio native and the first for the women’s team this season.
