OXFORD, Ohio — The University of Kentucky women?s basketball team charted its second win of the season, dominating Miami, Ohio 77-39 on Monday.
For the second straight game an abundance of Wildcats scored in double figures as junior forward Laura Meadows led the way with her first double-double of the season. Meadows knocked down 18 points and tyed her career-high 11 boards. She also recorded three blocks. Sophomore forward Tanesha Seaton also recorded season and career bests with her first career double-double, 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Erica Jackson and sophomore Carolyn Alexander scored 15 and 10 points, respectively.
?I am very pleased with our defense,? fifth-year Coach Bernadette Mattox said. ?That is something we have been working hard on in practice. We wanted to come out and play great defense. I thought Tanesha did an outstanding job, but she needs more games under her belt to really come to her own.?
Kentucky controlled the tempo early in the game, jumping to a 12-2 lead on six Jackson layups. The RedHawks fought back however on 10 first-half Aubree Hamilton points, to pull within four. Seaton and Katie Vieth provided the spark off the bench, adding to the inside threat of Meadows and senior Shantia Owens. Seaton scored eight points in the paint in the first half, while Vieth added four points to give the Cats a 36-21 halftime lead.
UK held Miami to a mere 23.2 percent shooting for the game and allowed only one Miami player to score over six points. Hamilton led the RedHawks with 16 points and nine rebounds.
?We made them take rushed shots and I was pleased with how we held them,? Mattox said. ?We still had too many turnovers and we aren?t as good as we want to be heading to play the No. 1 team in the country.?
UK will face preseason No. 1Connecticut (1-0) on Wednesday, Nov. 24 in the first round of the inaugural Coach vs. Cancer Challenge in Hartford, Conn., at 7 p.m. Old Dominion and Clemson will play in the opening round at 5 p.m. Both games will be televised on regional ESPN while the championship game on Nov. 26 at 4 p.m. will be televised on ESPN2.
