BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The University of Kentucky men’s soccer teamdroppeda heartbreaking 1-0 double-overtime decision to second-ranked Indiana on Sundayin the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
After over 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, Indiana’s All-Americanforward Aleksey Korol pushed a slow-rolling two-yard shot over the UK goal lineto give the defending champions the win in the 113th minute.
“I’m so proud of the effort our players gave today,” UK Coach IanCollins said. “Their work was unbelievable. Whoever was going to win todayneeded to get a couple of breaks, and we just didn’t get them.”
“I wish I could say this was a moral victory,” UK senior Lee Bakersaid.”But it isn’t. This loss is going to hurt for a very long time.”
UK’s offensive attack had been hampered in regulation, when strikerJason Bell was ejected after receiving his second yellow card of the match. Thedefense was then dealt a blow just minutes before the game-winner, when backRob Frey was forced to leave the field with a leg injury.
Indiana is now 41-3 all-time in NCAA Tournament games inBloomington andmoves to 17-3 on the year, while UK finishes its 1999 campaign at 13-7-1.
