LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men?s tennis team concluded a successful weekend at the Second Annual Charles Fluitt Classic on Sunday with wins by two of its top players, Carlos Drada and Edo Bawano. Bawano, the 82nd ranked player in the nation, was one of four players to finish the tournament 4-1, fourth among those who played at least three matches. Drada, ranked No. 27 in the nation, closed the tournament in a three-way tie for eighth with a 3-1 record.
Gustav Pousette also had a big finale, winning after losing the first set 6-4 and trailing 3-1 in the second set. The UK sophomore battled back to win the second set 6-4 and took the match with a 6-3 third set victory.
“This was a great weekend for us,” UK coach Dennis Emery said. “We played high quality opponents and did well. Our three goals for this weekend were to improve our doubles play, get some wins against opponents ranked in the top 100 and simulate the intensity and style of play found in the dual season. From those aspects, this was a very successful weekend.”
The Cats did have some success in doubles going 5-4 while their top duo of Johan Hesoun and Pousette went 2-1.
Baylor?s Sean O?Connor (4-0), Chris McDonald of Mississippi State (3-0) and Hazuan Hizan (3-0) cruised through the competition as the only undefeated competitors among those who played three or more matches for the tournament.
