UK volleyball to take on South Carolina and Georgia this weekend.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky volleyball team is set to open the SEC season on a high note after earning its biggest win of the season on Sept. 21, an emotional 3-2 win over in-state rival Louisville. The win marked the first time in the last eleven tries that the Cats were able to defeat the Cardinals. UK had last beaten Louisville in volleyball on Oct. 13, 1993, a 3-1 Wildcat victory at U of L.

In the 22 years of varsity volleyball at UK, the Cats’ have met the Cardinals a total of 39 times. Despite U of L’s recent ten-match winning streak, UK still holds a 26-13 lifetime advantage over the Cards.

UK has won three of its last five matches as the team gets set to meet two of its SEC Eastern Division foes, USC and Georgia. With Tuesday night’s victory, the Cats head into their Friday, Sept. 24 match at South Carolina with a 7-4 record. The Wildcats will make the sojourn to Athens for a meeting with the Bulldogs on Sunday, Sept. 26.

The Gamecocks (6-4, 0-0 SEC) will be looking to wrestle away second place in the division from the Cats when the teams match-up on Friday. Leading the attack for USC Head Coach Kim Christopher’s squad is senior outside hitter Crystal Moore, who leads the team with 107 kills. With the exception of its first win of the year, USC has followed every other victory this year with a loss. The Gamecocks are coming off a win in their last match versus Virginia.

While Georgia (3-5, 0-0 SEC) is currently last in the division, they are a talented team that is hungry for victories. Of their five defeats, four have come to top-25 teams. Stacy Buerger is UGA’s heavy hitter with 122 kills, an average of 4.07 per game.

The Friday match at South Carolina is set to begin at 7 p.m. with the Sunday contest at Georgia scheduled for 2 p.m. All times are Eastern.
