Gage’s two goals help Kentucky drill Dayton, 3-0.
(Sept. 19, 1999) — The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team captured its third straightvictory Sunday afternoon as the Wildcats downed the visiting Dayton Flyers3-0.
UK (4-2-1) was led by sophomore Annie Gage who scored two goals andadded an assist for the Cats. Freshman Elizabeth Ramsey put UK on theboard when she netted a eight-yard shot to the right corner of the goal, givingUK a 1-0 lead at the 20:34 mark. Gage was credited with the assist on theplay. Ramsey leads UK in goals scored this season with five.
Gage, a native of Westerville, Ohio, added to the UK lead when she fired ashot high over UD goalkeeper Stephanie Weisenfeld and into the right sideof the net, giving the Cats a 2-0 lead at the 56:42 mark.
At the 78:51 mark, Gage scored her second goal of the contest, a highfive-yard shot over Weisenfeld off an assist from Ramsey.
UD (5-2), which had won four straight games coming into Sunday’s game,took just four shots compared to UK’s 13.
UK freshman goalkeeper Jo Fletcher pitched the first shutout of her careerwhile tallying two saves.
“I think we finally made the most of our opportunities today,” UK coachWarren Lipka said. “The game was a little sloppy, but we still have room forimprovement. We just keep getting better every match.”
UK returns to action on Friday, Sept. 24, when the Cats play host to theTennessee Volunteers at the UK Soccer Complex. The match will begin at 7p.m.
