LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team fell to the 8th-rankedNebraska Cornhuskers 5-1 Sunday afternoon at the UK Soccer Complex.
Sophomore midfielder Najah Williams came off the bench to score two goalsfor Nebraska (4-0) which won its fourth straight game of the season as theHuskers outshot the host Wildcats 16 to four.
Kelly Rheem got the Huskers on the board first when she netted a five-yardshot over UK keeper Jo Fletcher off an assist from Shannon Tanaka at the21:17 mark.
UK (1-1-1) responded when freshman Elizabeth Ramsey scored her firstcollegiate goal on a 15-yard boot, tying the score at one goal apiece.Allison Peppers was credited with an assist on the play. Ramsey’s goal wasthe first goal scored against Nebraska this season.
Less than two minutes later, the Huskers took the lead for good on JennyBenson’s goal into the left corner of the net. Williams scored her firstgoal at the 41:07 mark when her shot hit the post and bounced in.
Senior Lindsay Eddleman’s header directly in front of the net gaveNebraska a 4-1 lead. Williams rounded out the scoring when she took acrossing pass from Christie Latham and put it into the left corner of the net.
“The key word today is mistakes,” UK coach Warren Lipka said. “You cannotmake mistakes against a top-10 team and expect to win.”
UK returns to action on Friday, Sept. 10, when the Cats travel toGainesville, Fla. to take on the defending National Champion Florida Gators.
