CINCINNATI – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team capturedits first win of the season Friday evening in Cincinnati, Ohio as the Catsdown Xavier, 3-1.

Leading the way for UK (1-0-1) was midfielder Annie Gage who scored thegame-winning goal and assisted on a goal. The Cats opened the scoring atthe 24:00 mark when Keri Boyce netted an 18-yard shot into the right cornerof the goal. Gage and Deanna Stayton were each credited with an assist onBoyce’s second goal of the season.

Xavier (1-2) tied the score at 1-1 off a 30-yard free kick by AnnetteGruber that sailed just under the crossbar and over the hands of UK goalieBeth Wells.

However, it was all UK in the second half as Gage put the Cats on top forgood when she netted a 10-yard shot off a deflection from UK’s AllisonPeppers at the 61:11 mark. Junior Jaime Dellbringge closed out the scoringfor the Cats at 78:14 when she put back in a deflected shot in front of theXU goal.

“It feels good to get that first win but we still have a long way to gobefore we get to where we want to be,” UK coach Warren Lipka said.

UK returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 5, when the Cats play host to8th-ranked Nebraska. The match at the UK Soccer Complex will begin at 1 p.m.
