LEXINGTON, Ky. – Former University of Kentucky women’s tennis player Christy Sigurski andthe entire women’s tennis squad have again been honored for academicachievements by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, ITA Media DirectorCasey Angle announced Monday.
For the second consecutive year, Sigurski, a 1999 UK graduate fromArlington, Va., was named a Division I Scholar-Athlete by the ITA based onher academic and athletic achievements. To be eligible for this honor, anindividual must be a junior or senior varsity letterwinner and carry a GPAof 3.5 or higher. Sigurski posted an impressive 22-16 record during the1998-99 campaign and was ranked as high as No. 64 in the nation. Sigurskiis also a three-time member of the Southeastern Conference Academic HonorRoll and is the first two-time ITA Scholar Athlete in the history of UKwomen’s tennis.
The 1998-99 University of Kentucky women’s tennis team was honored for thethird year in a row, as the ITA recognized the entire squad as anAll-Academic Team. For this award, a team must have a cumulative GPA of3.2 or better. Members of UK’s squad were Sigurski, Kelly Brown, MassoumehEmami, Brooke Skeen, Carolina Mayorga, Lauren Rookledge and Shannon Stafford.
The 1998-99 squad posted a GPA above 3.5 and finished the season ranked22nd in the nation.
“It’s is just another tribute to the women on our team.” UK Coach MarkGuilbeau said. “With their hard work, we’ve improved on the courts and inthe classroom. They were truly a joy to coach.”
