MINNEAPOLIS – University of Kentucky swimmers Rachel Komisarz and Melissa Olson each earned All-America honors at the 1998 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday.
An honorable-mention selection last season, Komisarz picked up All-America status outright this year with her seventh-place finish in the 100 butterfly, turning in a time 54.22.
Olson, a freshman from Charleston, W.V., registered her first All-American award with a 13th-place showing in the 400 individual medley to claim honorable mention honors. Olson just missed out on the championship finals and an outright All-American certificate, finishing ninth in the prelims – just seven-hundreths of a second behind the eighth-place finisher. The top eight placers in each event are named All-Americans, while finishers nine through 15 pick up honorable mention All-America status.
The 200 medley relay team of Jaime Siegele, Jennifer Clifford, Komisarz and Kosten barely missed out on honorable mention All-America honors, finishing 18th with a time of 1:45.03, just over a tenth of a second behind the 16th-place finisher.
