Cats-Terps Battle In Top-5 Matchup

Kentucky is facing the highest ranked team to play in Rupp Arena in 19years when the fifth-ranked Wildcats entertain No. 2 Maryland in anationally televised contest. The last time a visiting team ranked as highas second traveled to Lexington to face UK was Dec. 15, 1979, when No. 1Indiana lost to Coach Joe B. Halls squad, 69-58.

The unbeaten Terrapins (10-0) are coming off a 92-75 win over DePaul onMonday in the BB&T Classic in Washington, D.C., the same two-day tournamentwhere UM defeated Stanford, ranked fifth last week, 62-60. The Terps alsowon the Puerto Rico Shootout in November with wins over American-PuertoRico (82-32), UCLA (70-54) and Pittsburgh (87-52). Kentucky finished thirdin the tournament after Pittsburgh upset the Cats in the semifinals, 68-56.

Coach Tubby Smith is the only member of the Wildcats that hails fromMaryland. Smith grew up in Scotland, located in rural southern Maryland.

UK is currently on a four-game win streak since the loss to Pittsburgh,defeating three ranked opponents. The Cats own wins over No. 10 UCLA, No.No. 7 Kansas and No. 11 Indiana, as well as a victory over Miami (Fla.).

The Wildcats are in an eight-game stretch that features five teamsranked in the Top 25. Six of the eight teams played in last seasons NCAATournament.

This is the last game before finals week at UK.

Cats-Terps Series

UK owns a 5-3 record against Maryland. The last time the two teamsplayed was Nov. 24, 1995 at the Tip-Off Classic in Springfield, Mass. TheNo. 1 Cats opened the season with a 96-84 win over the 14th-ranked Terrapins.

The Wildcats also had beaten Maryland in the 1988 NCAA Tournament,90-81, but the game was deleted from the UK record books as part of thesanctions imposed by the NCAA for rules violations.

The first meeting between the teams occurred on Jan. 19, 1928, a 37-7victory by host Maryland. In Lexington, UK has won both games — 76-55 onDec. 15, 1956, and 58-56 in overtime on Dec. 15, 1957.

This is the first of two games scheduled between Kentucky and Maryland.Next season, the squads will battle at Cole Field House in College Park.

UK vs. ACC Teams

This is the first of three games against Atlantic Coast Conference teamsfor the Wildcats. UK will face Georgia Tech in the Delta Airlines Classicnext Saturday, Dec. 19, before lacing up the Nikes for Duke on Dec. 22 inthe Jimmy V. Classic at the Meadowlands.

Kentucky is 107-48 all-time against teams in the ACC. The Wildcats havewon their last four games against teams from that league. The last ACC teamto defeat Kentucky was Clemson, a 79-71 overtime win at the BCA Classic toopen the 1996-97 season.

Big Blue Double-Shot This is UKs sixth game to be televised on national TV this season, andthe 8:30 p.m. tip-off follows the Heisman Trophy Show on ESPN. UK juniorquarterback Tim Couch is one of four finalists invited to the DowntownAthletic Club in New York for the presentation.

Last Meeting When the two teams met last in the Peach Basket Hall of Fame Tip-OffClassic in Springfield, Mass., Mark Pope hit eight of 11 shots from thefloor and converted all nine free throws to tally 26 points as the No. 1Cats downed the Terps, 96-84. Tony Delk also added 21 to help UK overcome a30-point effort by Johnny Rhodes. Duane Simpkins added 16 points for theTerps and Keith Booth pitched in 11.

Marylands Laron Profit, Terrell Stokes and Obinna Ekezie all played inthe game as freshmen, as did UKs Wayne Turner, who made his college debutin his home state of Massachusetts. Ekezie tallied six points, fourrebounds and two points in the outing, while Stokes had four points andProfit was held scoreless. Turner recorded his first two points and firststeal as a Wildcat. He will soon join UKs prestigious 1,000-point clubwhile becoming the Cats all-time steals leader.

Coach vs. Coach Maryland head man Gary Williams is 0-1 vs. Kentucky. Coach Tubby Smith is1-0 vs. Maryland, earning the victory in the 1997 Rainbow ClassicChampionship game in Honolulu, 73-65 in overtime.

Rupp Arena UK, in its 23rd season at Rupp Arena, has a 294-34 (89.6%) record in the23,000-seat, city-owned facility. The Wildcats need six victories to reach300. They have recorded seven perfect home seasons and three seasons withonly one loss. The building opened in 1976. The Wildcats, 3-0 at home, willplay 13 games at Rupp Arena during the 1998-99 season.

More Ranked Teams at Rupp While No. 2 Maryland is the highest ranked team to play at Rupp Arenasince Indiana in 1979, Arkansas earns the distinction as being the lastteam to enter Rupp Arena with a higher ranking than the Wildcats, accordingto Associated Press archives.

In 1994, the eventual national champion Razorbacks were ranked third inthe nation when they defeated fourth-ranked Kentucky, 90-82, in Lexington.

Prior to the Cats-Hogs battle of 94, the last two top-five teams totangle in Rupp during the regular season occurred in 1984, when No. 4Houston, led by Akeem Olajuwon, was ranked fourth nationally before losingto third-ranked Kentucky, 74-67. Both teams later advanced to the FinalFour, where both lost to Georgetown.

Vs. Ranked Teams Kentucky is 3-0 vs. ranked teams this season after finishing with a 12-2slate against rated opponents last season. In 1996-97, UK finished with a9-4 record against ranked opponents, and in 1995-96, the Cats had a 10-2mark.

In addition, Scott Padgett, who struggled early from three-point range, isshooting 47.4 percent from the field and 22.2 percent three-point range.After nine games last season, he was shooting 38.6 percent from the fieldand 30.4 percent from outside the arc. He finished the season shooting 44.0percent from the field and 35.3 percent from three-point range.

Sagarin Rankings In the latest Jeff Sagarin Power Rankings dated Dec. 9, Maryland wasranked No. 1 with a 96.68 rating followed by Auburn (71.53) and Duke(77.28). Kentucky was rated 13th (75.96) based on its won-loss record andschedule strength.

Last Game Scott Padgett began the overtime period with a three-pointer and theWildcats never trailed again as they picked up their eighth win of theseason, 70-61, over 11th-ranked Indiana in Louisville.

UK used a 22-point, nine-rebound effort from Heshimu Evans to become onlythe third team in the nation to record five consecutive wins over Indiana,joining the likes of Purdue and Illinois. The win, which was delayed afterIU hit three three-pointers in the final 1:21 to battle back from anine-point deficit to for the OT, ruined Indianas bid to make BobbyKnights 1,000th win a memorable one.

Overtime Success After the 70-61 win over Indiana, Kentucky is 3-0 in overtime games sinceTubby Smith took over as coach. Last season, the Wildcats earned overtimevictories over Arkansas, 80-77, and Stanford, 86-85. The Cats had lostseven of their last eight overtime games prior to the three-game win streak.

Overall, UK is 40-33 in overtime games, dating back to Feb. 12, 1907.

For Tubby Smith, hes now 11-3 in overtime games during his eight-yearcoaching career. Hes 3-0 at Kentucky, 2-1 at Georgia and 6-2 at Tulsa,which includes a 2-1 mark in double overtime. His one overtime loss atGeorgia was an 83-81 defeat to Syracuse in the 1996 NCAA Tournament and oneof his OT defeats at Tulsa came at the hands of top-ranked Arkansas in 1994.

Thru 50 Tubby Smith has already tied Coach Adolph Rupps mark of 43 wins in thefirst 50 games at UK. Smith picked up win No. 43 against Indiana onTuesday, giving him a 43-5 (89.6%) UK record. Rupp was 43-7 to start his UKcareer, Joe B. Hall began with a 32-18 slate, Eddie Sutton had a 41-9 markand Rick Pitino started with a 31-19 record.

SEC Player of the Week Kentuckys Wayne Turner earned Player of the Week recognition by theSoutheastern Conference last week. The senior point guard from Boston ledUK to a 63-45 upset of No. 7 Kansas with a team-high 14 points. He followedup with 13 points and five assists against Miami. In the 51 minutes heplayed during the two games, Turner had seven assists and only one turnover.

Cats Close Gap On Kansas With the Wildcats win over Indiana earlier this week, coupled withKansas loss to Iowa, UK closed the gap on all-time wins in the 90s tosix. Despite starting the decade with a 14-14 record, UK trails Kansas268-262.

Cat Scan A balanced attack has been a strength for the Wildcats this season. UK hasfour players averaging double figures in scoring and six Cats are averaging3.0 rebounds per game or more.

Six different Wildcats have led the Cats in scoring through the first ninegames.

Passing Big Men Kentuckys starting front line –Michael Bradley, Heshimu Evans and ScottPadgett — have totaled 47.7 percent of the teams assists. Evans leads thesquad with 35 assists, Padgett has 25 dimes and Bradley has 14 (total = 74).

The Cats are averaging 17.2 apg, which means 60.3 percent of all fieldgoals scored this season have followed an assist.

Center Production UK has gotten solid play from its center combo of Michael Bradley, JamaalMagloire and F/C Jules Camara.

The trio is averaging 19.5 ppg, 14.1 rpg and 4.1 bpg.

Muuuuuu Heshimu Evans, who served as UKs spark plug off the bench during lastseasons drive to the title, now leads the team in scoring, rebounding andassists. Evans, a 6-6 small forward, averages 13.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg and 3.9apg. He also leads the squad in minutes played at 29.4 mpg. He equaled hiscareer high with 22 points against Indiana and nearly had his seconddouble-double of the season before finishing with nine rebounds.

Evans also has totaled 1,189 points and 576 rebounds in his four-yearcareer split between Manhattan College and Kentucky.

D it Up The Wildcats held opponents to 38.4 percent shooting last season, thelowest field goal percentage for UK opponents in 36 years, dating back to1962.

This season, UK is off to an even greater start defensively. Through thefirst eight games, opponents have converted just 37.5 percent of their shotattempts. The Wildcats have held two teams under 30 percent shooting forthe game — Colorado (27.4%) and Kansas (29.4%).

Rebounding UK finished second nationally last season in rebound margin, outreboundingopponents by 8.2 rpg. This season, UK has not been outrebounded in anygame, although the Cats only edged out Wright State by two boards andPittsburgh by one.

Turner Climbs Steals, Assists Lists Wayne Turner continues to climb the steals and assists lists at UK.

Note: Turner already holds the UK record for most steals in a season with79 as a sophomore.

SEC Leaders Sophomore Michael Bradley is second in the Southeastern Conference infield goal percentage, Wayne Turner is seventh in free throw percentage,Jamaal Magloire is second in blocked shots and Heshimu Evans is seventh inthe league in scoring and ninth in assists.

Through the first nine games, Bradley is hitting 70.6 percent of hisshots. Turner, a career 59.3 percent free throw shooter entering theseason, has canned 73.2 percent of his tosses from the charity stripe.Magloire, who has played less than 17 minutes per game, is averaging 2.6bpg in six outings. Evans is averaging 13.8 ppg and 3.9 apg.

1,000-Point Race Seniors Scott Padgett and Wayne Turner hope to join the prestigious44-member 1,000-point club at UK. Padgett has scored 885 points in hiscareer and Turner has posted 887 career points.

Turner Chases NCAA Record Senior guard Wayne Turner has a chance to play in more college basketballgames than anyone on record. Turner, who has logged time in 123 gamesduring his career, has a chance to break the mark of 148 games held byDukes Christian Laettner.

The Wildcats have a 30-game regular-season schedule and Turner must playin 35 games to claim the record. The Boston native has missed only one gameduring his UK career — the 1996 NCAA Championship game against Syracuse,when Anthony Epps played the entire 40 minutes at point guard.

In addition, Turner hopes to become the first non-Duke player to play infour Final Fours. Bryan Davis (1989-92), Greg Koubek (1988-91) andChristian Laettner (1989-92) all participated in the Final Four for theBlue Devils.

Double-Doubles Heshimu Evans recorded his first double-double of the season with 11points and 11 rebounds (eight offensive) against seventh-ranked Kansas inthe Great Eight. Evans has four double-doubles at UK and two at Manhattan.

Scott Padgett tallied his seventh career double-double with 21 pointsand 12 rebounds in the season-opener against Eastern Kentucky. Padgett hadfive double-doubles last season and one as a sophomore.

Freshman Jules Camara registered his first double-double with 10 pointsand 11 rebounds in 23 minutes in the opener. He followed up the effort with15-points and eight rebounds against Mercer.

Long November UK played more games in November than ever before, finishing with a 5-1record. The 99 Wildcats also were the first UK team to win five gamesduring the month. Last season, the Wildcats played five games, and in 1989,they played four.

For the third consecutive year, UK lost a game in November whenPittsburgh defeated the Wildcats, 68-56, in the P.R. Shootout. And for the10th time in 11 seasons, the Wildcats lost one of their first five games ofthe season.

Caribbean Cats While the Wildcats finished the Puerto Rico Shootout with a 2-1 record anda third-place trophy, the trip proved to be an adventure.

First, the Wildcats returned to Lexington from its Wright State game inCincinnati at 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23. Six-and-one-half hours later(7 a.m. that day), the team departed for the Louisville airport for itstrek to the Caribbean.

UK caught a chartered 747 with 598 Big Blue fans, the same plane (AmericanAirlines) and the same pilot used in the filming of the movie Air Force One.

Upon arrival, the Wildcats headed to American University for practice.After sitting nearly 90 minutes in San Juan traffic, Coach Tubby Smithturned the bus around and headed for the team hotel, another one hourdrive, while canceling practice in the process. Oh, and one more thing…the team hotel was located nearly 90 minutes from the Puerto Rico Shootoutheadquarters.

Cat Streaks Ended The UK loss to Pittsburgh last month ended the Wildcats 17-game winningstreak, the schools 10th best streak overall. Kentuckys streak began witha 79-54 win over Florida on Feb. 18, 1998. The loss to the Panthers alsoended UKs 16-game win streak at neutral sites.

The Wildcats have also:
won 14 straight road games. The last team to defeat UK on the road wasSouth Carolina (Feb. 4, 1997);
played in the last three Final Fours;
played in the last four regional championship games;
won six of the last seven SEC Tournament titles, including the last two;
have hit three-pointers in 343 consecutive games.

The last time UK was held without a three-point field goal was Nov. 26, 1988, a three-pointloss to Seton Hall in the Great Alaska Shootout (63-60).

AP Trivia The Kentucky Wildcats have been ranked in The Associated Press collegebasketball poll every week since the second week of the 1990-91 season, aspan of 146 consecutive weeks.

UK has been ranked in the Top 10 by the AP in the last 77 weekly polls,dating back to Feb. 21, 1994, when the Wildcats fell to 11th after 34straight weeks in the top 10 that began in 1992.

Season Openers With its win over Eastern Kentucky, UK has won nine of its last 10season openers. The one loss was a 79-71 overtime defeat to Clemson on Nov.15, 1996 at the BCA Classic in Indianapolis.

This is UKs second earliest start to the season in school history. TheClemson-UK game on Nov. 15, 1996 was the schools earliest tipoff. The Catsalso played Duke on Nov. 17, 1979, an 82-76 overtime loss in the Tip-OffClassic in Springfield, Mass.

Just Like Big Brother Two Wildcats this season are younger brothers of other college basketballplayers. Michael Bradleys older brother David is a senior forward atCharleston Southern. Tayshaun Princes older brother Tommie is a seniorforward at Pepperdine.

Anthony Leaves Team Sophomore Myron Anthony quit the UK team on Dec. 3. The 6-7 forward fromJacksonville, Fla., had seen action in three games this season. Hesexpected to transfer following the end of the semester.

PRESEASON NOTES

UK Signs Four Kentucky received four national letters of intent during the Novembersigning period. Keith Bogans of Hyattsville, Md., Marquis Estill ofRichmond, Ky., John Stewart of Indianapolis and Marvin Stone of Huntsville,Ala., all signed to play basketball for the Wildcats in 1999-2000.

Bogans, a 6-4 guard who averaged 19.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per gamelast season at DeMatha Catholic, is rated as one of the top guards in thenation by nearly every recruiting expert. He was a second-team All-Americanby Parade Magazine last season while leading DeMatha to a 34-1 record and aNo. 3 ranking nationwide. He picked Kentucky over Connecticut, Michigan andNorth Carolina.

Estill, a 6-9, 265-pound forward/center at Madison Central, played only 10games last season due to an injured left knee, but averaged 16.8 points and11.7 rebounds per game. As a sophomore, he led the state in shooting,canning 76.9 percent of his shots. He tallied 14.0 ppg and 7.7 rpg as theIndians advanced to the regionals with a 21-9 record. He chose UK overLouisville.

Stewart, a 7-0, 285-pound center from Lawrence North High School, averaged15.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game last season. He earnedAll-County honors and played on the Junior All-Star team last summer inIndiana.

Stone, a 6-9, 244-pound power forward, averaged 19.1 points, 12.7rebounds, 4.5 blocks and 3.0 assists last year in leading Grissom High to a25-5 record. He was named Class 6A Player of the Year in Alabama and athird-team Parade Magazine All-American. He chose the Cats over Alabama andAuburn.

White House Tour The 1998 NCAA Champion Kentucky Wildcats toured the White House and metPresident Clinton on Mon., Nov. 9. Clinton honored the Wildcats and theTennessee Lady Vols on their respective 1998 titles in an East Roomceremony which was broadcast live on radio and TV across Kentucky.

Seniors Cameron Mills and Jeff Sheppard presented Clinton with a No. 1Kentucky jersey. We gave you one of these back in 1996, and I never recallyou wearing it, Mills said during the ceremony. But Im going to give youanother one in good faith that youll wear it.

Cameron, Clinton responded, for all you know, I slept in it.

The ceremony concluded a day that began with lunch at Greveys, a popularrestaurant in Falls Church, Va., thats owned by former UK All-AmericanKevin Grevey. From there, the Wildcats toured the Supreme Court beforetheir trip to the White House.

SEC Media Picks UK was the favored squad to repeat as Southeastern Conference Champion andScott Padgett was selected to the five-man All-SEC team when voting wasconducted at SEC Media Days in early November.

The Cats received 17 of the 21 votes to repeat as league champion withTennessee earning three votes and Arkansas getting one.

Padgett was the Cats lone member of the All-SEC team. Wayne Turnerreceived one vote for preseason MVP, but was left off the All-SEC squad.
