LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team claimed the Kentucky Invitational Tournament title on Sunday, besting Winthrop 2-1 at the UK Soccer Complex.
Rob Frey opened the scoring for UK, blasting a shot past WU goalie Justin Stevens in the 34th minute for a 1-0 lead. It appeared that Frey’s goal would be the game-winner until the 83rd minute, when Winthrop’s Dave Oldham put in a header to tie the score at 1. But just 24 seconds later, UK responded when Giovanni Fernandes drilled a 25-yard shot into the Eagles’ net, giving UK the 2-1 win and the tournament title.
UK landed four players on the All-Tournament team, led by KIT Offensive MVP, Lee Baker. Joining Baker on the tournament team were Wildcats Johnny Hinds, Giovanni Fernandes and Todd Stonestreet. With the win, UK improves to 2-5, while Winthrop drops to 6-2.
In the consolation game, Virginia Tech topped The Citadel 4-1, behind a four-goal second half. The Hokies broke open a scoreless game in the 64th minute, when Stanislav Licul netted the first of his two goals to give Tech a 1-0 lead. Viriginia Tech then exploded with three more goals in remaining 25 minutes for the 4-0 win.
UK looks to extend its two-game win streak on Saturday, when the Cats face South Alabama at 2:30 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex.
