Lexington, Ky. – University of Kentucky women’s basketball player Laura Meadows scored a three-game total of 11 points and six rebounds in the USA Women’s Select Team’s series with Puerto Rico last week. Meadows scored six points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out one assist in the first game on July 3 as the USA Select Team overpowered Puerto Rico 78-64. She went on to score five points in game two as the USA Select Team defeated Puerto Rico 85-58 on July 4. The third game of the series proved to be much closer as Puerto Rico fought back from a 20-point deficit to tie the game late in the second half. The USA Select Team hit two free throws in the final minute to win 72-70.
Meadows, the only Southeastern Conference invitee, was chosen to the 12-member team from a group of 33 training camp members. This is the second time Meadows has represented the United States, as she also was selected to the 1997 USA Basketball Women’s Junior World Championship Team.
“I am really proud of how hard she has worked this summer. Obviously it has paid off to be able to play with such an elite team,” UK women’s basketball coach Bernadette Mattox said. “Laura just represents the type of players we are getting at Kentucky to help this program move forward.”
The USA Women’s Select Team will continue to compete July 8-15 in a series of exhibition games in Poland and Spain.
