LEXINGTON, Kty. – Freshman Amy Anderson, a product of Lexington’s Lafayette High School, turned in a 2-for-3 performance in just the second start of her career, but the Kentucky softball team could not rally past Tennessee, falling 6-1 at the UK Softball Complex on Friday.

The Wildcats took control of the game early, taking a 1-0 lead after an inning of play. Tiffany Kruse doubled and scored a batter later when senior Jacki Haynes singled to left field to give UK an early advantage. But Tennessee (34-29) responded in the third, taking advantage of three UK errors with six runs on six hits. UK (19-40) tried to mount a comeback, posting at least one hit in each inning, but each rally was thwarted by the Tennessee defense. Sarah Snider blasted a double in the fourth and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Anderson appeared to have notched her second straight hit, which would have driven in Snider, but UT pitcher Buffy Walker robbed Anderson of a single and completed the play at first to end the inning.

Again in the seventh, UK looked ready to mount a comeback. Anderson ripped her first career double to start the inning, her second hit of the game, but could not advance as the next three UK batters were retired to end the game.

In game 2, Tennessee posted eight runs in the first and held off a late UK rally, claiming an 11-1 win.

The two teams meet again Saturday at the UK Softball Stadium with the first pitch of the doubleheader set for 1 p.m. Saturday’s twinbill also marks the final appearances of UK’s first-ever seniors, Lorie Horner and Jacki Haynes, who will be honored before the game in a Senior Day ceremony.
