The University of Kentucky softball team lost both games to No. 7 LSU onSunday afternoon at the UK Softball Complex as the Tigers clinched at leasta tie for the 1999 SEC regular season crown.UK (22-41, 5-19 SEC) could only manage two hits off LSU (45-8, 23-3)pitcher Britini Sneed as the Tigers cruised to a, 8-1 victory over theWildcats in the first game.
All nine LSU batters got a hit in the game and the Tigers finished with 16total hits. Left fielder Auburne Ziober went 3-3 with an RBI for LSU.Sneed struck out seven UK batters as she improved her to 18-4 this season.UK pitcher Keary Camunas took the loss as her record fell to 13-19.In the second game, LSU survived a late rally by the Wildcats, as theTigers defeated UK, 5-2.
Down 5-0, UK rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Wildcatsscored two runs with two out. Andy Eilertson walked and then Sandi Denglertripled to scored Eilertson. Jennifer Howland followed with a base hit toscore Dengler.
The Wildcats threatened again in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Trailing the Tigers 5-2, UK loaded the bases with nobody out. However, LSUpitcher Ashley Lewis overpowered the Wildcat hitters as Howland flied outto third base. Colleen Boddy and Beth Fogle struck out to end the gamewith the bases loaded.
Dengler led UK at the plate, going 3-3 with two singles and a double. The win moved Lewis’ record to 22-3 while UK pitcher Jennifer Howland fellto 5-14 this season. Lewis struck out eight Wildcats on the afternoon.
UK returns to action on Friday, May 7, when the Wildcats travel toKnoxville, Tenn. to square off against the Tennessee Volunteers with adoubleheader set to begin at 6 p.m. The Cats will close out the regularseason against the Vols on Saturday, May 8, with a doubleheader set tobegin at 1 p.m.
