Quarterback Tim Couch will be named first-team preseason All-America in the college football preview issue of Sport magazine.
Couch, a junior from Hyden, Ky., completed 363 of 547 passes for 3,884 yards and 37 touchdowns last season. He led the nation in passing attempts, completions, completion percentage, and yardage. He broke or tied 17 school records and 10 Southeastern Conference records.
The college football preview will appear in the September issue of Sport, which is slated to hit the newsstands on August 1.
Comstock, Liening, Zurcher Earn Diplomas: Three players who will be seniors in eligibility in 1998, offensive tackles Kris Comstock and Jonas Liening and strong safety Jeff Zurcher, received their bachelor’s degrees during graduation ceremonies May 9.
Comstock completed his degree with a major in marketing. He has been a two-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Next fall, he plans to add a second major in management. Liening graduated with a degree in social work. He earned a place on the 1997 SEC Academic Honor Roll. His academic plan for the fall is to add a minor in business.
Zurcher finished with a 4.0 grade point average with a double major in English and advertising. Next fall, he will enter UK’s Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce with the goal of completing a master’s degree in diplomacy. Zurcher will be very busy next month. On June 18 in Minneapolis, Minn., he will be among a team of UK students who will make a presentation in the national finals of the annual American Advertising Federation collegiate advertising contest. The UK team will be competing against 14 other schools for the national championship.
The UK group advanced to the national finals by winning the regional competition in April, defeating 11 schools from the Ohio/Kentucky/West Virginia area. It was the first time that the University of Kentucky entry had won the regional since 1980. Zurcher was one of five students who made the UK presentation at the regional.
Following the national competition, Zurcher will fly to San Diego to present a research paper at the convention of the National Syndicated Newspaper Columnists.
In addition to graduating with a perfect grade point average, Zurcher was one of UK’s nominees for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship and he has been a two-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Homecoming Game Set: The South Carolina game on Oct. 10 has been selected for the 1998 Homecoming at the University of Kentucky. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. EDT unless selected for network television.
