The University of Kentucky women’s golf team will start its fall season at the Florida State Lady Seminole Invitational this weekend, Sept. 18-20.

Junior Jenny Dugan and sophomore Jenny Throgmorton hope to replace departed seniors Heather Kraus, now a UK assistant coach and the ’98 Kentucky State Amateur Champion, and Julie Palmer, the ’98 Ohio State Amateur Champion. Dugan and Throgmorton, along with junior Chanda Day, hope to pace the Lady Kats to a repeat of the Lady Seminole title UK won last fall.

“Outside of Jenny Dugan, who participated in this event last year, we have a lot of young talent who need experience,” Bettie Lou Evans said, now in her 18th year coaching the Lady Kats. “And with a strong field this weekend, it will be a real challenge for us to repeat. Regardless, this will be a good test for us to find out where we are early in the season.” The 20-team field includes Alabama, Auburn, Central Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Florida Southern, Jacksonville, Mississippi, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Rollins College, South Alabama, South Carolina, South Florida, Stetson, Tulane, UAB, Wake Forest, and host Florida State.

Adding depth to the Lady Kats this season are talented freshmen Towa Okiyama, Kristen Pepe, Charlotte Svennevig and Jennifer Cilenti. Okiyama, a native of Ibaraki, Japan, claimed 13 first-place honors while finishing in the top three 20 times during high school. Pennsylvania native Pepe finished in second place at the U.S. Junior Girls Championship with a round of 77, shooting a 35 on the back nine. Svennevig, a native of Esbjerg, Denmark, posted seven top-10 performances during her 1997 season. Cilenti attended Henry Clay High School in Lexington.
