LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky All-American Cedric Kauffmann continued his runin the Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships on Thursday, defeating two-time NCAA runner-up Wade McGuireto advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round. He faces sixth seed David Caldwell at 7 p.m.Kauffmann served an ace to close out his 6-4, 6-2 victory over McGuire, who played at the University of Georgia.A vocal crowd rallied behind Kauffmann in this match-up of former Southeastern Conference standouts.

Women’s top seed and defending champion Karin Miller trailed Australia’s Amanda Grahame 1-3 before reelingoff 11 straight games to advance to the quarterfinals against Abigail Tordoff of Great Britain, a lucky loserinto the main draw. In a match between past NCAA champions, Keri Phebus saved three set points against Jill Craybas in the first set andwon the match 7-6(9), 7-5. Phebus, a qualifier, faces fourth seed Jing Qian Yi. Eighth seedJulie Pullin of Great Britain also advanced.

Two seeds remain on the men’s side. No 1 Cristiano Caratti of Italy plays PaulGoldstein, the 1998 NCAA runner-up from Stanford. Sixth seed Caldwell, who won achallenger event earlier this year, faces Kauffmann. Caldwell won his first match on themain ATP Tour last month in Washington, D.C., when he ousted 13th seed Kenneth Carlsenin the first round. Caldwell was a two-time All-American at North Carolina who turned proin 1996.

Matches begin at 2 p.m. at the Boone Tennis Complex, with the Kauffmann-Caldwellmatch starting at 7. General admission tickets are $8.

A children’s clinic open to the public will kick-off the festivities at 1 p.m. at theBoone Tennis Complex. Conducting it will be twins Mike and Bob Bryan and their father,Wayne. The Bryans won the NCAA doubles title together and Bob won the singles title asthey led Stanford to the team championship.

Fanfest opens at 3 p.m. Friday and runs through the weekend. Kids can clock theirserve speed, play mini-tennis, and hit targets on the court to win prizes. Friday and Saturday,they can test drive a NASCAR simulator. Also, GTE’s Amazing Yellow Adventure mobileInternet site is free to everyone to surf the ‘Net and explore the GTE Superpages Directoryon-line.

All LFUCG employees receive half-price admission to Friday’s matches. Mayor Pam Miller, an avid tennis player, will be on hand for a fundraiser forLexington Habitat for Humanity called “Swing Fling,” which gets underway at 6 p.m. with awine-tasting and food sampling from local restaurants followed by a silent auction. Ticketsfor Swing Fling are $25 and include admission to the tennis matches.

The 1998 $75,000 Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships, the only tennis event inKentucky affiliated with the worldwide pro tennis tours, runs through Sunday at the Hilary J.Boone Varsity Tennis Complex on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington. It is oneof only a handful of professional tennis events that features both men and women like theGrand Slam tournaments. Players are competing for prize money as well as ranking points onthe major pro world rankings. In 1998, alumni of the tournament have defeated top playersPete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Conchita Martinez. For tickets, call 606-224-2276.
