HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team opened Mid-American Conference play on Friday, edging Marshall 2-1 in overtime.

Marshall (5-4-1, 0-1 MAC) jumped on the board early, as the Thundering Herd’s Tommy Greenwalt found the net in the eighth minute. The Wildcats refused to roll over, however, and knotted the game on a Billy Dwyer goal in the 61st minute. The two teams traded shots for the remaining 30 minutes, but neither team could find the net.

The game appeared to be headed to a second extra frame, but with just 1:28 left in the first overtime, UK’s Tyler Cook slammed a header into the Marshall net for a 2-1 Wildcat victory.

With the win, UK (5-5, 1-0 MAC) extends its win streak to five games, tying the school record. The Cats return to MAC play on Sunday, when they battle Western Michigan at the UK Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
