ATHENS, Ga. –University of Kentucky women’s tennis players Kelly Brownand Carolina Mayorga picked up wins on Friday in the opening round of theUniversity of Georgia Invitational.
Brown and Mayorga, both seeded among the tournament’s top 16 players, hadfew problems in the two-set victories. Brown topped Yovanna Kriskapa ofGeorgia State, 6-2, 6-2, while Mayorga ousted Andrea Lord of MississippiState, 6-2, 6-3, as both advanced to the second round.
Fellow Cats Brooke Skeen, Jackie Spicijaric and Shannon Stafford did notfare as well, dropping first round matches and falling into the consolationbracket. Skeen fell, 7-6 (5), 6-0, to sixth-seeded Amelie Detriviere ofMississippi State, Stafford dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to seeded CeciliaHincapie of Clemson, and Spicijaric was ousted in three sets, 5-7, 7-5,6-3, by Selia Mathew of Alabama.
The tournament continues Saturday and runs through Monday.
