LEXINGTON, Ky. – Student-athletes at the University of Kentucky are given the opportunityto excel both on the playing field and as role models in the Lexingtoncommunity. The University of Kentucky’s Community Outreach Programprovides athletes with the chance to interact with children, schools andlocal organizations in the Lexington area and give back to the communitythat is home to these athletes throughout their collegiate careers. TheGymKats have participated in several programs throughout the year.
Buddy Program (College of Education): Student-athletes serve as rolemodels for elementary students at local schools. Athletes help youngerstudents develop self-esteem through weekly interaction.
Copi-Cat Pen Pal: Student-athletes who are matched with elementarystudents correspond throughout the academic year. As a pen pal toelementary students, athletes encourage students to read.
Hospital Breakfast with Santa: Each year, UK student-athletes assist theUK Hospital with a special Christmas breakfast for children at thehospital.
Schoolhouse Rock: An “academic pep rally” in which UK student-athletesencourage youngsters in academic and social skills. More that 2,000fourth- and fifth-graders, representing approximately 15 schools, cameto Memorial Coliseum for the first Schoolhouse Rock in April, 1997.
The GymKats are proud of their involvement in community activities andlook forward to the chance to give back to their community.
