LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 13th-ranked University of Kentucky men’s tennisteam shut out East Tennessee State, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAATennis Tournament on Saturday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.The Wildcats (16-9) won the doubles point and then swept three singlesmatches in straight sets. With No. 1 singles player Johan Hesoun out withan injury, senior Patrik Johansson stepped in the singles lineup to play atNo. 6. Johansson earned a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 victory over ETSU’s RegisGrouardo, and Johan Grunditz defeated Ignacio Perez 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5singles. Gustav Pousette clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory overJuan Yannuzzi.
“We played a really good match today,” UK coach Dennis Emery said. “It wasexactly what I expected after having three weeks off [between the SEC andNCAA Tournaments].”
With the loss, the Buccaneers end their season with an 18-4 record.The Cats advance to face No. 14 South Carolina in the second round of theNCAA Tournament. The Gamecocks defeated Indiana, 4-2, in the first match ofthe day. South Carolina (18-11) dropped the doubles point to IU (14-10),but rebounded to win four singles matches and claim the victory.
UK and South Carolina square off at 1 p.m. Sunday to determine whowill advance to the Sweet Sixteen in Athens, Ga., May 22-30.
“When we played South Carolina during the regular season, we lost4-3, and it came down to the third set of the last match,” Emery said.”Hopefully it will be the same way again tomorrow.”
