COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of Kentucky softball team upset the No.10-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks, 4-2, on Friday, April 2, but lost theremaining three games in the four-game series.
Facing the SEC’s leading pitcher in Gamecock Megan Matthews, UK (17-25,2-6 SEC) pounded out eight hits against the freshman ace led by Beth Fogle,Angie Dal Pozzo, and Tiffany Kruse who each had two hits for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead, but USC (34-9, 9-3) came right backwith a run of its own to tie the score at 1-1.
In the top of the fifth, UK took the lead and never looked back. WithSandi Dengler on first and Dal Pozzo on third, the Wildcats executed adouble steal. Dengler stole second base while Dal Pozzo went home to givethe Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
UK came right back in the top of the sixth to add two insurance runs.Kruse and Leslie Kwiatkowski hit back-to-back singles. Dal Pozzo hit adouble which scored Kruse and Kwiatkowski, giving UK a 4-1 lead headinginto the bottom of the seventh.
UK pitcher Keary Camunas put the clamps down on the Gamecocks in the finalthree innings despite giving up a solo home run to USC’s Kim Pietro withtwo outs in the seventh. She struck out six Gamecock batters and moved herrecord to 10-9 with the win.
In the three-year history of the UK program, the Wildcats have neverdefeated a team ranked in the top ten nationally.
USC defeated UK in the second game on Friday, 6-3. Fogle led the Wildcatsby going 3-4 at the plate.
On Saturday, the Gamecocks swept UK, 3-2 and 8-1. In the first game, theWildcats led until the final inning when with two outs and the basesloaded, USC’s Adrienne Genovese drove a full-count pitch to centerfieldthat went off the tip of Kwiatkowski’s glove and dropped to score the twogame-winning runs.
UK will return to action on Friday when the Wildcats play host to theGeorgia Bulldogs in a doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. The two teams willmeet again on Saturday in a doubleheader scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
