The University of Kentucky volleyball team moved to 12-5 on the year and 3-1 in the Southeastern Conference on Sunday as they defeated the Lady Rebels of Mississippi (6-10, 0-4 SEC) in four games, 15-8, 15-10, 13-15, 15-13.
Kentucky was led by freshman setter Whitney Sample, who shattered nearly all of her career highs. The Texas-native notched 72 assists, 16 digs and three block assists in only her second collegiate start. Senior outside hitter LaTanya Webb also had a big night for UK with 26 kills, eight digs and a .413 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Katie Eiserman’s 17 kills and 14 digs gave the Illinois-native her sixth double-double of the year.
“I really see us growing as a team,” UK coach Jona Braden said. “This was a real fight and a great character builder for our team. I think we will draw a lot from this game down the road.”
Ole Miss was led by junior outside hitter Kari Elggren with 22 kills and 13 digs against the Wildcats. Sophomore middle blocker Anna Hackbarth also had a solidperformance, notching nine kills and 12 digs in the match.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, Oct. 9, when they travel to Gainesville to takeon the No. 9 Florida Gators. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
