LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky’s junior varsity squad defeated Campbellsville, 49-45, today at Commonwealth Stadium in its first game of the season.
Wildcat quarterback Cory Doyle threw a “Tim Couch-like” performance, connecting on 25-of-39 passes for 436 yards and six touchdowns. Three of those touchdowns landed in the hands of freshman wide receiver Vince Harrison, while freshman walk-on Neal Brown charted two TD’s and 218 yards.
“We got some real good looks at some guys on the offensive side of the ball tonight,” Coach Chris Hatcher said. “We don’t get a lot of time to practice so I was pleased with our performance. We’re excited to get a win in our first ballgame.”
The Wildcats (1-0) led 49-27 late in the third quarter but the Fighting Tigers (0-1) fought back within four points with three minutes remaining in the game. UK’s defensive team twice stopped the Tigers’ attempts to tie the game with two-point conversions, sealing the victory for the Cats. Tiger quarterback Chad Deener was responsible for three of Campbellsville’s seven touchdowns.
UK also defeated Campbellsville last year in a close game, 25-23. The JV Wildcats will be in action again on Thursday, Oct. 1 versus Hargrave Military Academy at Commonwealth Stadium.
