The University of Kentucky football team held its firstscrimmage of spring practice for two and one-half hoursSaturday at Commonwealth Stadium.
As expected, the media and 250 fans in attendance sawplenty of passing. All totaled, three Wildcats quarterbackscombined to complete 67 of 102 passes for 770 yards and fivetouchdowns.
Sophomore quarterback Tim Couch completed 44 of 57passes for 469 yards, four touchdowns, and threeinterceptions. Redshirt freshman Ryan Keller, the second-team quarterback, completed 19 of 39 for 248 yards, one TD,and one interception. Another redshirt freshman, third-teamQB Brian Siddens, completed 4 of 6 for 53 yards.
Sixteen receivers caught passes during the scrimmage.The leaders included senior wide receiver Norman Mason (9 for144 yards, one TD), junior wide receiver Kevin Coleman (9-120), sophomore wide receiver Chad Spencer (6-81), seniorwide receiver Kio Sanford (6-60, one TD), sophomore tight endJimmy Haley (6-56, two TDs), sophomore wide receiver QuentinMcCord (6-44), sophomore halfback Anthony White (5-44),junior wide receiver Marvin Love (4-49), junior wide receiverCraig Yeast (4-35), and junior wide receiver Lance Mickelsen(3-41, one TD).
The running game was paced by White, who ran for 34yards on seven carries. Redshirt freshman fullback WendellChilds ran nine times for 24 yards and sophomore fullbackMichael Daies picked up 19 yards on six carries.
On defense, senior strong safety Tremayne Martin had twointerceptions and returned one of them 100 yards for atouchdown. Senior middle linebacker Bob Holmberg had aninterception and blocked a punt. Redshirt freshmancornerback Eric Kelly and redshirt freshman linebacker MattLayow also had interceptions.
The Wildcats had 31 offensive possessions during thescrimmage and tallied five touchdowns and three field goals.
“I thought there were lots of good plays both ways,”said Hal Mumme following his first spring scrimmage as headcoach of the Wildcats. “I think the offense is ahead ofschedule. The defense started playing good team defensetoward the end of the scrimmage. Overall, I thought it was apretty good performance.”
The Wildcats return to practice Monday. Spring practicewill conclude with the Blue-White Game on Saturday, April 26.
