MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team will get their 2013 spring season underway Feb. 18-19, at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala., at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course. The 54-hole stroke play event will begin on Monday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. ET. The teams will play 36 holes on day one before concluding the tournament with a round of 18 on Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m. on holes No. 1 and 10.
The Wildcats lineup will feature senior Chase Parker, juniors Cody Martin, Stephen Powers and Ben Stow, along with sophomore Will Bishop. Senior Joseph Barr, junior Matthew Anderson and freshman Harrison Greenberry will play as individuals.
“We are ready to get the spring season underway,” head coach Brian Craig said. It is very early but I feel like we are in decent form at the moment. The challenge will be to keep our focus on the things we can control and stay patient. If we take care of those two items, we will have a successful start to the semester.”
UK wrapped up its fall season with top-5 finishes in all four of the tournaments they played in. Kentucky placed second at the Saint Mary’s Invitational (Sept. 24-25), tied for second at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate (Oct. 14-16), fourth in the Jack Nicklaus Invitational (Oct. 8-9) and fifth at the Wolf Run Invitational (Sept. 15-16).
Parker had one top-10 finish in the fall, placing tied for sixth at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational. Martin recorded three top-20 finishes and had the lowest stroke average on the team in the four fall tournaments of 74.11. Powers was the highest finisher for the Wildcats in two of the fall events, tying for 15th in the Wolf Run Invitational and tying for sixth in the Saint Mary’s Invitational. Bishop had a promising start to his sophomore year with an individual championship at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate, posting a score of 2-under-par.
Stow comes to UK from Salisbury, England where he was rated as the No. 2 ranked European golfer last summer. Stow was not eligible for the fall season due to transfer regulations.
The tournament is a 16-team field and includes Akron, Arkansas State, Auburn, #19 Illinois, Illinois State, Louisiana-Lafayette, #14 Louisiana State, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, #17 Vanderbilt and #23 Wake Forest
The Mobile Bay Intercollegiate will be hosted at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course, which is a par 72 and has a 7,212 yard layout. The USA Individual Tournament will be a 36-hole event played on Monday and Tuesday at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course (par 71, 7,158 yards).
