MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Junior diver Christa Cabot advanced to the finals at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships for the first time in her career and finished eighth overall on a busy second day in Minneapolis, Minn., for the University of Kentucky swimming and diving team.
Cabot, one of four Wildcats competing at the three-day event, advanced to the A Final and scored a 293.00. Cabot scored a 350.35 in the prelims after she finished 19th yesterday, just shy of a B Final berth, in the 1-meter diving event.
Thanks to Cabot, who scored 11 points with her finals appearance, the Wildcats are guaranteed to place at the Championships for the first time since 2011, when UK finished 28th with 18 points.
Junior Christina Bechtel also notched the best finish of her career with a 19th-place showing in the 100 yard butterfly. She touched the wall in 52.36, just 0.07 seconds shy of a top-16 finish and a spot in the evening finals.
Fellow junior Abby Myers placed 35th overall in the same event with a 53.17. Her time, a career-best, moves her up to fourth-fastest all-time in the UK record books. She previously held the fifth-fastest time, with a 53.57. The swim was the first NCAA Championships competition for Myers of her career.
Freshman Danielle Galyer competed in the 100 yard backstroke and finished 44th with a time of 54.11.
The three-day concludes Saturday. Prelims will begin at noon ET, while the finals, which will feature the top 16 finishers in the prelims, commence at 8 p.m. Cabot will compete in the platform, while Galyer will swim in the 200 backstroke.
