LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team used a first half goal from Jade Klump followed up by second half goals from Courtney Raetzman and Alex Carter to collect a 3-0 win over the Ohio University Bobcats on Sunday afternoon in the newly-christened Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
“It means everything. It’s what so many people have worked so hard for.” UK head coach Jon Lipsitz said about winning on the same day the ceremony was dedicated to the Bell family. “We had a special alum visitor from 1992, the first team that went varsity, in the locker room to talk to the players before the game. That’s special. That’s really special. We talk about how important it is to leave a legacy. This is the beginning of a new legacy for our players to leave and be able to come back years from now and say, `Remember when? Remember when we started everything here with the new stadium.’ It’s just so special having Wendell and Vickie here and Mitch and the administration and Dr. Capilouto, you can’t really ask more than for the environment we had here today.”
Kentucky for the third-straight match dominated the play and possession of the match, outshooting Ohio 30-2 overall in the match and 13-1 in shots on goal. The Wildcats took 17 corner kicks, with OU also taking one on the afternoon.
With the win, UK improves to 3-1-1 and extends its season-high winning streak to three matches. The Bobcats, under the direction of second-year head coach, and former UK assistant Aaron Rodgers, fall to 1-3-0 in 2014.
“All credit to Ohio,” Lipsitz said. “Obviously, Aaron Rodgers is a fantastic coach that was here with us and we’re so proud of him and what he’s developed there. We knew it wouldn’t be easy to break them down and I thought we had some good chances to, but if you let a team hang around, they’re a good team. They’re going to find their moment and they did and our goalkeeper made a fantastic save pushing it off the post. But that’s inches from a 1-1 game and boy does that change at that moment. I’m proud of the fact that we stuck to our plan. We just need to play faster and we need to finish better. I think, as a coach, I have to remember we’re only a few games into the season and I’m very demanding on details. Right now I think we can do better, but I have to remember that it’s early in the season and we shouldn’t be our best yet.”
Klump opened the scoring in the 14th minute as she put the Wildcats ahead with a clean-up goal after numerous chances by Arin Gilliland, Michaela Dooley and then Klump in a scrambling sequence in front of the box. Klump’s goal was her second of the season, and third of her career. Klump’s goal was assisted by Dooley, who recorded her third assist in the last two matches for UK.
At halftime, Ohio would trail 1-0 before coming out of the locker room with their best scoring chance of the match. Carly Manso had a 1v1 on the right side just seconds after the halftime whistle, as Manso rifled a shot that knocked the left woodwork, as Taylor Braun made an unbelievable deflection with her right paw, setting aside the chance and making it hit the post and bouncing out.
Just 25 minutes later, UK made it 2-0 as Courtney Raetzman scored her second goal in as many matches in the 71st minute with Arin Gilliland getting the assist.
UK would put the match away in the 78th minute as Alex Carter scored her second-career goal, and first of the 2014 season on a rocket from above the 18 that was hit on the ground with pace, took a deflection, and then went into the back of the net.
Kentucky now moves into week three of its season on Friday night, as UK will travel to Louisville on Friday night for a 6 p.m. ET match in the Derby City. Kentucky has knocked off the Cardinals the last four seasons, and have won the last three meetings, 2-0.
