KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Tyler `Chip’ McDaniel capped his first collegiate tournament with a final round 68 to lead the Kentucky men’s golf team to a fifth place overall finish in its first tournament of the 2014-15 season. McDaniel and classmate Cooper Musselman tied for 14th overall to pace the Cats.
“This week was somewhat typical of a young team,” UK coach Brian Craig said. “Our scores were all over the place. However, I am encouraged that our good golf was exceptionally good. I am also encouraged that we were led by two freshmen this week in Tyler McDaniel and Cooper Musselman. We are a work in progress, but our future is bright.”
McDaniel turned in his best round of the tournament with a 4-under par, 68, to lead the Wildcats in the final round of action and shoot up the leaderboard to 14th. McDaniel was aided by four birdies on the front nine for his best round in the Blue and White.
Musselman capped his first collegiate tournament in a tie for 14th following a final round 79. For the weekend, Musselman carded a 3-over par, 219. Junior David Snyder turned in a 2-over par 74 in his final day of competition to finish in a tie for 19th with an overall finish of 4-over par, 220. Sophomore Stephen Stallings placed 33rd overall with a final round 77 to finish the tournament at 10-over par. Rounding out UK’s starting lineup was senior Will Bishop who placed 56th with a 79 on the final day of competition.
Freshman Fred Allen Meyer, playing as an individual, placed in a tie for 49th with a final round 3-over par 75. Meyer was also appearing in his first collegiate tournament as a true freshman. Junior Todd McDaniel rounded out the Wildcats with a 77, his best round of the weekend, to finish tied for 71st. Kentucky shot a final round 298 to finish at 19-over par.
South Florida led from start to finish and claimed the tournament with a 14-under par 850. Rounding out the top five were Georgia State, Georgia Southern and Troy.
The Wildcats return to action Sept. 20-21 at the Wolf Run Invitational in Zionsville, Ind.
