BOCA RATON, Fla. – After navigating a treacherous early-season non-conference stretch with a 4-3-1 record, the Kentucky men’s soccer team will begin Conference USA play on Saturday at FAU.
The conference lid-lifter for both teams is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET. The game will also be streamed live at http://bit.ly/1reNQD5.
The two teams are meeting for the third time ever, with UK having won both previous times, including by a 6-1 margin last year in Lexington. FAU is 0-5-1 this season.
UK is 4-3-2 all-time in C-USA lidlifters.
UK enters conference play in better shape this year than it did a year ago. UK was 2-4 going into conference play last season.
UK’s current body of work is highlighted by a win at then-top-ranked Notre Dame earlier this month, in addition to a draw with then-No. 19 Furman last week.
The Wildcats will be looking to get back on track at FAU, coming off a loss to No. 8 Louisville on Tuesday Night at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex in front of 3,368 fans – a school-record.
UK is led by captain and reigning Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Player of the Week Callum Irving.
Irving entered the week with a career goals-against-average of 0.96 per game, which ranks third in program history.
UK is allowing fewer than half a goal per game this season, and entered the week with the sixth best goals against average in the nation (NCAA statistical rankings are updated on Mondays and UK played on Tuesday).
Irving has saved over 85 percent of the shots he has faced this year, which also ranked sixth-best in the country entering the week.
The Wildcats have allowed four goals in eight matches this year as the team has kept a clean sheet in five of those outings.
UK also boasts a balanced offensive attack as six Wildcats have scored a total of seven goals this year, with senior striker Justin Laird as the only Wildcat with more than one goal to his name (2).
