Team Records and Series Notes

  • Kentucky is 14-5 on the season and 7-4 in the SEC, while Tennessee is 12-4 on the year and 6-2 in the SEC.
  • This was the 71st all-time meeting between Kentucky and Tennessee in women’s basketball.
    • Tennessee leads the all-time series in games played 56-15, including 22-10 mark in games played in Lexington.
    • This was the third all-time meeting between teams at Rupp Arena with UK holding a 2-1 record in those games.
    • This was the second time in program history that UK has won back-to-back home games against Tennessee. It also happened in 2012 and 2013.
    • Kentucky has defeated Tennessee four times in a span of five meetings for the first time in program history.
    • Kentucky has defeated Tennessee three times in a span of four home games for the first time in program history.
    • This is the second largest margin of victory for Kentucky against Tennessee in program history (15 points), and their largest in a home game against the Volunteers. On Mar. 6, 2020, Kentucky defeated Tennessee by 21 points in the SEC Tournament.
  • Kyra Elzy is in her first season as head coach at Kentucky.
    • Elzy is now 14-5 as head coach of Kentucky. 
  • UK is now 859-553 all-time in its 47th year of varsity women’s basketball.
  • The Wildcats hold an all-time record of 498-177 at home, including a 30-19 mark inside Rupp Arena.
  • Kentucky is ranked No. 20 in the latest AP Top 25 and No. 18 in the USA Today/Coaches Top 25.
  • The Wildcats will return to action Monday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. ET at Florida.
    • The game will be broadcast on SEC Network.

 
Team Notes

  • Kentucky used the starting combination of senior guard Chasity Patterson, senior forwards Tatyana Wyatt and KeKe McKinney and junior guards Jazmine Massengill and Rhyne Howard.
    • This was the first time this season that UK has used this starting combination, holding a 1-0 record in those games.
    • This was the first career start for Jazmine Massengill at Kentucky.
    • Chasity Patterson scored first for Kentucky in the game – the fourth time this season she has been the first Wildcat to score.
    • Dre’una Edwards was the first sub for Kentucky.
      • It was the seventh time Edwards has been the first sub for the Wildcats.
    • Tennessee won the tip, marking the 14th time this season that UK has lost the opening tip.
  • Neither team shot the ball well to start the game with Tennessee starting 5-of-21 from the field, while Kentucky was 5-of-17. The Lady Vols were 0-of-3 from the 3 and UK was 2-of-8 from long range.
    • UT had a 10-4 advantage in paint points in the first quarter.
  • Kentucky started the second quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 20-13 lead but Tennessee responded with five straight points to cut it to 20-18. UK answered right back with a 3 by Tatyana Wyatt and after a UT bucket Rhyne Howard got back-to-back steals, scoring a fast-break layup and creating another layup for Dre’una Edwards to put UK up 27-20 and force a UT timeout with 5:40 to go in the first half.
    • After the timeout, Howard got another steal that led to a Chasity Patterson layup and a 29-20 UK lead.
  • The Wildcats continued to roll in the third quarter going on a 12-0 run as part of a 15-2 run. UK held a 35-20 lead at that point, but the Lady Vols answered by ending the quarter on a 6-2 run to cut it to 37-26 at halftime.
    • UK went 9-of-17 from the field and 2-of-3 from long range in the second quarter.
    • At the half, the team rebounds were even 23-23 and the paint points were even 16-16.
    • UK’s 12-0 run was its largest in an SEC game this season.
    • Kentucky is 12-3 this season and 7-2 in the league when it leads at halftime.
    • This tied UK’s largest halftime lead in a game this season. The Wildcats also led Alabama by 11 at halftime earlier this season at Rupp Arena.
  • Tennessee came out blazing after halftime starting the third quarter on a 13-2 run to tie the game 39-39 with 5:54 to go.
    • The run continued to 19-2 and 15-0 before Kentucky stopped it with a Jazmine Massengill 3 at 2:54 to go in the third quarter.
    • Since UK took a 35-20 lead late in the second quarter, Tennessee went on a 25-4 run over the next 9:30 of game action to tie the game.
    • Kentucky started the third quarter going 1-of-15 from the field.
    • Tennessee went 7-of-14 from the field and 2-of-3 from long range in the third quarter.
  • Kentucky started the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run, getting a jumper by Wyatt, layup by Howard and 3-pointer from McKinney.
    • The Wildcats kept the foot on the gas in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Vols 16-3 to end the game and earn the 71-56 victory.
  • The Wildcats went 10-of-20 from long range in the game and are now 7-0 this season when they hit 10 or more 3s.
    • Blair Green hit a 3 in the game and Kentucky is now 10-1 when she hits one from long range.
  • Kentucky had 17 assists in the game and are 10-1 this season when it has 15 or more assists and 8-0 when it has 17 or more.
  • In the first meeting in Knoxville, the Lady Vols outrebounded Kentucky 56-25 and had a 44-18 edge in paint points. Thursday, the Wildcats cut that to a 42-38 UT rebounding edge and a 30-26 advantage in paint points.

  • The win was Kentucky’s fourth of the season against a ranked opponent and the 99th all-time in program history.

    • This was Tennessee’s lowest scoring output of the season.

    • Howard has 1,462 career points as a Wildcat, which ranks her 14th all-time in scoring at UK.
      • She needs 20 more points to tie Stacey Reed for 13th all-time.
    • This was only the ninth time in Howard’s career she has not scored in double figures.
    • It was also only the ninth time in her career she has not hit a 3-pointer in a game.
