SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Freshman Isabelle Johansson remains in the hunt for the individual title at the South Bend Regional with a score of even par and one more round to go after 18 holes of competition on Friday at the Warren Golf Course.
Johansson couldn’t quite match her spectacular opening 18 holes during the second round, but she posted a solid score of 2-over par on Friday nonetheless and sits in a tie for eighth place and five shots out of the lead heading into Saturday’s conclusion.
As a team, the Wildcats posted a 301 for a second straight day and sit at 26-over par through 36 holes. In 12th place, Kentucky will need to make up nine shots in the final round to catch sixth-place Tulane and qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The top six teams in this week’s 18-team regional in South Bend, Ind., will advance — along with the top six teams from each of the other three regionals — to the NCAA Championships, to be held May 22-27 the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
Kentucky remains ahead of three teams that entered the week ranked higher in the national rankings.
“Today was a moving day and we unfortunately came up short,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “Each player had some good things going in the middle of the round and just couldn’t capitalize on that and finish. It’s frustrating to see because this group works hard and it just hasn’t quite come together for us this year. They have a lot left in the tank and I’m excited to see them play with no regrets tomorrow.”
Purdue (6-over par), the only team to reach red numbers on Friday, surged into second place behind Duke (1-over par). Wake Forest (9-over par), Arizona (10-over par) and UC Davis (13-over par) rounded out the top five.
Kentucky’s bright future has been on display this week in the form of its potential. UK has posted 21 birdies through the first two rounds, the fifth most in the field.
Freshman Grace Rose has been responsible for seven of those birdies, the second most in the tournament. The Nicholasville, Ky., native carded a 76 on Friday and sits at 9-over par for the tournament and in a tie for 51st place.
Johansson has been UK’s best golfer through the first 36 holes. Though she was limited to one birdie on Friday, she only gave three bogeys back and remains in prime position for the individual title and the best finish of her young career.
Sophomore Haley Mills is vying for her seventh top-20 finish of the 2014-15 season after a second-day 75 that included two birdies. She sits at 5-over par overall and in a tie for 29th place.
Junior Sarah Harris rebounded on Friday with a 76. The Hermitage, Tenn., product is at 12-over par through 36 holes and in a tie for 70th. Junior Cylia Damerau is at 15-over par and in a tie for 86th.
Kentucky, making its 20th appearance in regionals and the fifth straight under Borst, will finish up the NCAA South Bend Regional on Saturday morning with the final 18 holes. Fans can continue to follow along with live scoring at golfstat.com.
