Senior Peter Wetzlar Competes at Toyota U.S. Open Championships
ATLANTA – University of Kentucky senior Peter Wetzlar will face the nation’s top swimmers this week, as he competes at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships from Dec. 4-7 in long-course meters. Hosted by USA Swimming at the Georgia Tech Campus Recreation Center, session times are at 10 a.m. for prelims and 7 p.m. for finals.
While Wetzlar, a native of Zimbabwe, is ineligible to represent the USA in international competitions such as the Olympics, foreign athletes are still permitted to participate in the Toyota U.S. Open Championships and compete against some of the fastest swimmers in the country.
Even though he is ineligible to compete in the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials because of his foreign status, he has already met one trial cut this season in the 50-meter freestyle (22.77).
Wetzlar is a leading candidate to represent Zimbabwe at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. He currently holds the Zimbabwe record in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events – 50m freestyle (22.77) and 100m freestyle (50.50). He’ll get an opportunity this week to improve his career-best and nation-leading times.
The Wildcat will compete in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events this week. He is the 34th seed in the 50m freestyle and the 66th seed in the 100m freestyle.
He’ll compete in the 50m freestyle on Thursday and the 100m freestyle on Saturday. The TV and webcast schedule can be found here.
