Johansson Paces UK Women’s Golf at Mercedes-Benz Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore Isabelle Johansson posted the round of the day for the Kentucky women’s golf team on Tuesday as the Wildcats finished in 13th place at the Mercedes-Benz Championship.
Johansson fired a final-day 75 to pace Kentucky and finished in a tie for 34th at 10-over par. Overall, the Wildcats carded a team score of 62-over par during the 54-hole tournament, the second of four matches this fall.
Kent State held on to its first-day lead with an even-par showing Tuesday. The Golden Flashes finished at 5-under par for the tournament – the only team in red numbers – beating out host Tennessee (4-over par) and Iowa State (5-over par).
Johansson, who has been a model of consistency over her last few tournaments since joining the Wildcats in January, recorded another steady round Tuesday with 12 pars, five bogeys and one birdie. It’s the second straight top-40 finish of the season for Johansson and the third of her collegiate career.
Junior Jordan Chael, playing in her second tournament as a Wildcat, carded her second straight top-40 finish after tying for 10th a week ago at the Minnesota Invitational. Chael ran into some trouble Tuesday with nine bogeys but was able to stay near the top of the field with two birdies. She finished at 7-over par Tuesday and 11-over for the tournament.
Sophomore Grace Rose fired a final-day 9-over par and completed the tournament in a tie for 54th.
Freshman Anna Hack finished the first tournament of her college career in 75th. The Paducah, Ky., native had her best round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship on Tuesday with a score of 7-over par.
Junior Megan Kinney ended the day in 77th place.
Hosted by the University of Tennessee, the 19th annual Mercedes-Benz Championship featured 14 teams, four of which (No. 15 Tennessee, No. 21 Ohio State, No. 24 North Carolina State and No. 29 UNLV) were ranked in Golfweek’s preseason top 30. Eight of the 14-team field made the NCAA regional field in 2015, including Kentucky.
The Wildcats will take a two-week break before competing in the Rut’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational, Oct. 9-11, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
